What is the Wellbeing Economy?

Updated: Nov 20

In today’s world, the concept of economic success is often tied to growth, profits, and productivity. But what if we shifted our focus from just growth to the wellbeing of people and the planet? This is where the Wellbeing Economy comes into play. It represents a fundamental rethinking of how economies function and who they serve.

What is the Wellbeing Economy?

The Wellbeing Economy is an approach to economic systems that puts people and the environment at the heart of policymaking and economic strategy. Instead of focusing purely on GDP growth and corporate profits, the Wellbeing Economy strives to enhance quality of life, reduce inequality, and ensure sustainability for future generations.

In a Wellbeing Economy, success is measured by the wellbeing of people—how healthy, happy, and fulfilled they are—and by the health of the planet. This approach challenges the assumption that continuous growth is the key to prosperity. Instead, it emphasizes values such as fairness, sustainability, and thriving communities.

Key Principles of a Wellbeing Economy:

  1. Environmental Sustainability: Economies must operate within ecological limits to protect natural resources and ecosystems for future generations.

  2. Social Equity: The Wellbeing Economy seeks to reduce inequality, ensuring that economic benefits are shared fairly across society.

  3. Economic Resilience: It promotes long-term stability over short-term profits, ensuring that communities can weather crises like climate change and economic shocks.

  4. Health and Wellbeing: Policies are designed with the goal of improving people's physical, mental, and social wellbeing.

Why Do We Need a Wellbeing Economy?

As the world faces unprecedented challenges such as climate change, rising inequality, and resource depletion, it’s clear that our current economic systems are unsustainable. The Wellbeing Economy offers a way to reimagine prosperity and focus on what really matters—people and the planet.

By focusing on sustainability, social justice, and community health, the Wellbeing Economy presents a roadmap for creating a future that works for everyone, not just a few.
